I Turned 40

Enjoying my bush bath.

Enock, our incredible Maasai guide throughout the trip. We learned so much from him.

What an incredible experience!

How cute are these giraffes?

COTTAR’S

1920s CAMP

Last week I turned 40.

Leading up to it, people kept asking me how I wanted to celebrate… what I wanted to do to ring in this new decade. I never had to think twice when saying that I wanted to go back to Africa and spend it in nature. The question was where to stay and what to actually do?

Word of mouth (and tremendous Google reviews) led me to Cottar’s Safari in Kenya. They’re literally the OG when it comes to safari, having been around since 1919 and being the first family to actually introduce it to the country.

Within its 100+ years operating, their ethos has evolved (along with their lodging) to be as ethical as it can get - both for the environment and for the natives on the land, the great Maasai. In a world where everything seems to be green-washed, Cottar’s is the real deal.

We got to learn more about the Maasai, both the men and the women. We got to learn about the environmental efforts happening. We got to see lions, and elephants, and giraffes…

And because it was my birthday, my husband and mother surprised me with a massage, and bush bath respectively.

So here’s the thing, yes you can come here to see nature and relax. The massage I got was INCREDIBLE. The bush bath was one of the most special moment’s in my life. I got to see my favorite animal… lions.

It’s vintage luxury at its finest. But to not immerse yourself in everything Cottar’s has to offer with the Maasai culture would be a great detriment. Safari’s are usually once in a lifetime trips for people, so being able to soak it all in would be very advised.

All in all, I could not have asked for a better way to ring in my entrance to the fourth floor.

Sunsets in the bush.

Day trip to a Maasai village.
