Why I Turned Down A $15,000 Job

Last week I spilled the tea on turning down a $15,000 job for one of my top talent… but why did I do it? It’s simple.

When I got the contract the brand wanted the usage “in perpetuity.” This means that they can use my talent’s assets for the campaign until the end of time. Literally.

In my 21 year career, I can safely say I have never signed a contract which asks for this kind of usage. I always ask for more money, and I cap it at a certain amount of years with room to negotiate later.

In this particular case, the brand didn’t want to budge. It was forever or nothing. So we kindly declined.

These situations are why I created my Brand Partnership Contract Template. Infused with my expert insights, the template helps you shape and structure your partnerships with brands, and has vital information on how to read and redline a contract to best defend your content creation business. No more guesswork, no more uncertainty.
